This double EP represents a bit of a musical departure for Mr Pilgrem. Increasingly bored with making music with nasty noises, he has firmly rediscovered his love of funk and this is the first of a musical series that is all about the good groove regardless of tempo (but created in a modern context). This increasingly talked-about ‘new genre' has also become known as Nu Funk. (See the forthcoming edition of iDJ and Tillate for features).

‘Dance With Me’ is a collaboration with Australian singer  Arianne Shreiber from the cult band Icon. They met after she provided backing vocals for Rennie’s collaboration with Sopranos theme tune writer Larry Love (which is on this EP in dub form as 555). There are real horns arranged by Canadian sax legend Andrew Spence (Hold On/555).Guitar from William ‘Hustle’ South, plus a whole lot of grooviness. There is also a rare dub version of Rennie’s much requested track with Chickaboo ‘Celebrity’

Rennie is also pursuing a similar musical direction as one half of Bush Doctors with Jem Stone from Fingerlickin’. Their first released was played right across the dj spectrum. Rennie is currently hard at work scoring his first feature film ‘The Fix’ (he acts in it also) and writing music for TV. He is just back from a very successful Tour of Australia and New Zealand where the nu funk sound wowed crowds from Perth to Auckland.

IVORY - HAND GRENADE (+ Excision & Datsik RMX)
 (RAT RECORDS)
Format : vinyl and digital
Release Date  Mid/ End Feb 2010

Hand Grenade’ is a rocket-fuelled adrenalin shot of blistering bass and earth-shattering drums, topped off with the hi-octane lyricism of Ivory, the super-sharp-shooter MC whose scattershot fusion of diverse influences is set to see him stride out of the South London underground to claim his rightful spot at the pinnacle of the indie rave scene.
This youthful, Brixton-born motor-mouth grew up on a diet of jungle, old skool rave, UK garage and punk, diverse forms which have been fused with surgical precision into a fresh and vibrant sound that fits 2010 like a velvet glove. ‘Hand Grenade’, the lead single from Ivory's forthcoming debut album, ‘Jack In The Box’, is street level sonic chicanery that recalls prime era Prodigy with added ghetto attitude.
Heads out there will recognise the supreme technical prowess of sound engineer Wizard on the knobs and dials, while on the flip, 22-year old Canadian Excision turns in a heavy-as-all-hell, no-holds-barred powerslam of a remix which shows exactly why he's been making such a big name for himself across north America and beyond with his hip-hop-infused dubstep style.
The full Ivory album, which arrives in June 2010, features collaborations with underground EDM legends such as Deekline, Fresh and the Breakfastaz. Hold tight for some serious weapons of mass destruction, which are set to blow up dancehalls across the nation.

What is Breakbeat

Breakbeat (sometimes breakbeats or breaks) is a term used to describe a collection of sub-genres of electronic music, usually characterized by the use of a non-straightened 4/4 drum pattern (as opposed to the steady beat of house or trance). These rhythms may be characterised by their intensive use of syncopation and polyrhythms.

History

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, hip-hop DJs (starting with Kool DJ Herc) began using several breaks (the part of a funk or jazz song in which the music "breaks" to let the rhythm section play unaccompanied) in a row to use as the rhythmic basis for hip-hop songs. Kool DJ Herc's breakbeat style was to play the same record on two turntables and play the break repeatedly by alternating between the two records (letting one play while spinning the second record back to the beginning of the break). This style was copied and improved upon by early hip hop DJs Afrika Bambaataa and Grand Wizard Theodore. This style was extremely popular in clubs and dance halls because the extended breakbeat was the perfect backdrop for breakdancers to show their skills.

In recent times, the term breakbeat has become synonymous with the many genres of breaks music which have become popular within the global dance music scene, including big beat, nu skool breaks and progressive breaks. DJs from a variety of genres, including house and techno, work breaks tracks into their sets. This may occur because the tempo of breaks tracks (ranging from 110 to 150 beats per minute) means they can be readily mixed with these genres, whereas the comparatively fast speed of jungle and drum and bass (160-180 bpm) may have restricted the utility of these subgenres to DJs playing slower-tempo music. Some artists well known for breakbeat include DJ Icey, Stanton Warriors, Deekline and Wizard, Hybrid, Huda Hudia, The Brainkiller, Paket, The Freestylers, NAPT, Pendulum, Adam Freeland, Rennie Pilgrem, The Breakfastaz, Ctrl Z, Freq Nasty and Plump DJ's.

Breakbeats are used in many hip hop, rap, jungle, and hardcore songs, and can also be heard in other music, from popular music to background music in car and jean commercials on the radio or TV.
