This Way Up mixed by DJ Friction (Passenger)

Nubreaks Reviews: "This Way Up" mixed by DJ Friction (Passenger)

Before listening to this mix, I expected a whole heap of attitude. It has not disappointed. "This way up" is the work of DJ Friction, one of the hottest drum'n'bass producers on the scene and the well respected breaks trio Aquasky. As Friction's debut breaks mix, this really does excel.

Friction begins with a growler. Nick Thayer and Micah's 'Scrambler' reveals the theme of this mix - dark, raw and full of bass. Very nice opener indeed. The mix includes a tasty variety of tunes from the likes of Backdraft, Dopamine, Tom Real, The Rogue Element, Noisia (obviously!), Kid Blue, Klaus Heavyweight Hill, Timmy Schumacher, The Ragga Twins, Phetsta, Rico Tubbs and the mighty Aquasky. Of course, my favourite tune of the moment 'Control Freek' by Aquasky & Friction ft Spyda is featured, highlighting the brilliance of DJ Friction and Aquasky. The tunes are relatively dark for the duration of the mix but do become more funky (without losing the attitude) towards the end of the mix, finishing with The Ragga Twins ft Aquasky & DJ Go 'Everybody Hype'.

There are a number of elements to this album I like. Firstly I find the tune selection is fairly diverse, yet each track is big - which in my opinion epitomises the direction that breaks seems to be heading. I like the fact that it doesn't feel it has to calm down at any point - there is absolutely no messing about! Furthermore I admire Friction's impressive transition from drum'n'bass to breaks. He definitely adapts himself to suit breakbeat but it is still apparent that those are his roots (shown by the inclusion of producers such as Noisia and Phetsta in this project). This mix does not focus on being fantastic in structure, but rather a fantastic selection of tunes and this is where this project has succeeded the most.

The verdict? This is the way up.

RATING: 4 out of 5
